What is the Ibex Index?
The Ibex Index, also known as the IBEX 35, is a stock market index that tracks the performance of the 35 largest and most liquid Spanish companies listed on the Bolsa de Madrid, the Madrid Stock Exchange.
The index was created in 1992 and is calculated by taking the total market capitalization of the 35 companies and dividing it by the total market capitalization of all the companies listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange.
How is the Ibex Index calculated?
The Ibex Index is calculated using a modified capitalization-weighted method. This means that the market capitalization of each company is multiplied by a weighting factor that takes into account the company's liquidity and free float.
The weighting factors are reviewed and updated every six months by the Technical Advisory Committee of the Ibex Index. The committee is made up of representatives from the Bolsa de Madrid, the Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV), and the Spanish Association of Securities Dealers (AVS).
What are the largest companies in the Ibex Index?
The largest companies in the Ibex Index by market capitalization are:
- Inditex (Zara)
- Banco Santander
- Telefonica
- BBVA
- Iberdrola
How has the Ibex Index performed over time?
The Ibex Index has performed well over the long term, but it has been volatile in the short term.
The index reached a peak in 2007, before the global financial crisis. It fell sharply during the crisis, but has since recovered and reached new highs.
What is the future of the Ibex Index?
The future of the Ibex Index is uncertain. The index is likely to continue to be volatile in the short term, but it is expected to perform well over the long term.
The Spanish economy is expected to grow in the coming years, which should support the growth of the Ibex Index.
